Why mouth cancer screening is important

Protecting against mouth cancer

We take mouth cancer extremely seriously and all our dentists carefully screen for warning signs as part of their check-up appointments. Our hygienists are also trained to recognise potential indications of the disease.

Although mouth cancer can affect anyone, it is particularly common in men and the over 55’s (although numbers are increasing within women and the younger age groups). The majority of mouth cancer cases are linked to smoking and drinking alcohol.

Acting quickly is key

Many fatal cases of mouth cancer could have been avoided with earlier intervention. Despite being an extremely serious condition, it can be successfully treated if spotted early enough.

If you are in any way concerned about mouth cancer then please book an examination with us as soon as possible.

Signs of mouth cancer

Mouth cancer can appear in all areas of the mouth, including the tongue and lips.

Typical signs are:

  • A persistent, painless mouth ulcer
  • A white or red patch on the oral tissues
  • Unusual lumps in the mouth or around the jaw
  • Continual hoarseness

If you have any of the above symptoms that continue for longer than three weeks (or one week in the case of ulcers) then you should make an appointment to see one of our dentists.

Mouth cancer FAQs

  • Smoking (cigarettes, cigars and pipes)
  • Chewing tobacco habits (such as gutkha or paan)
  • Alcohol
  • The risk is greatest is both alcohol and tobacco are consumed
  • Sexually transmitted HPV (human papilloma virus)

Yes, the condition can be fatal if it is not detected early enough. Many people leave it until too late before taking action and going for a check-up.

Mouth cancer is treatable if caught in its early stages. If you are concerned about any suspicious symptoms in your mouth then you should book an examination with us.

We will be able to put your mind at rest or refer you on to a specialist if necessary.

  • Visit the dentist for regular check-ups or hygiene appointments
  • Limit alcohol consumption and stop smoking
  • Keep an eye out for unusual marks, lumps or ulcers in your mouth
  • Eat a healthy, vitamin-rich diet including plenty of fruit and vegetables.
  • If possible, use a barrier cream on your lips when exposed to the sun

We will refer you on, usually to a hospital consultant, for further investigation. They will carry out a thorough examination of your case and test for cancer (which may include a biopsy).

If cancer is found then further tests will be taken to assess the best course of action. If the condition has been caught early enough then the chances of recovery are good.
